The Redwood Forest
From Wikipedia: “Coast Redwoods occupy a narrow strip of land approximately 750 km (470 miles) in length and 8-75 km (5-47 miles) in width along the Pacific coast; the elevation range is mostly from 30-750 m, occasionally down to sea level and up to 920 m (about 3,000 feet) (Farjon 2005). They usually grow in the mountains where there is more precipitation from the incoming moisture off the ocean. The tallest and oldest trees are found in deep valleys and gullies, where year-round streams can flow, and fog drip is regular. The trees above the fog layer, above about 700 m, are shorter and smaller due to the drier, windier, and colder conditions. In addition, tanoak, pine and Douglas-fir often crowd out redwoods at these elevations. Few redwoods grow close to the ocean, due to intense salt spray, sand and wind.”
Avenue Of The Giants
If you have never seen a California redwood tree, you are missing one of the greatest marvels of nature. The redwood is a majestic tree towering high in the sky; some have been measured at 360 feet high. I went camping as a kid visiting the redwood forest up near Eureka, in which an old redwood has been destroyed by lightning. The stump had been turned into a dance floor that measured 22 feet across at its widest point. At one point someone built a cabin over it. But to get there you have drive through the Avenue Of The Giants (the Old Redwood Highway back in my day). These redwood forests are a treasure not only to California and the U.S. but to the world. If you ever get a chance to see the Avenue Of The Giants…GO!
Camping & Hiking
We’ve been camping in the redwoods since before my daughter was born. She’s 22 now. We took her on her first trip when she was two. Of course we went to our favorite campgrounds, Standish Hickey State Recreation Area. Standish Hickey is right on the border of Humboldt and Mendicino counties along the Eel River. The park sits in a redwood grove with plenty of hiking and hours of fun swimming in the river. The campgrounds are about 20 minutes south of Garberville and about and hour north of Willits. Not really a long drive if you’re coming from the bay area.
Sometimes the summer bridge gets washed out at Standish Hickey so we’ve been forced to find someplace else to camp. All the campgrounds in the redwoods are nice but some tend to get more crowded than others.
Here’s a list of the redwood campgrounds we’ve camp at:

- Burlington Campgrounds
- Humboldt Redwoods State Park
- Russian Gulch State Park
All of the parks and campgrounds are beautiful. Camping among the majestic redwoods allows you to forget about the rest of the world for a while. You can just sit back and relax and enjoy the giant trees or you can go hiking along the 100′s of trails through ancient old growth redwood forests. My advice…Go! Plan your camping trip now and go. On the last day of camping we almost always take the long way home along highway 1. This way you follow the scenic Pacific coastline, stopping every once in a while to put our feet in the sand or look at some whales. Then we stop in the picturesque seaside town of Mendicino for lunch. Mendicino is full of art galleries, restaurants, and shops. Then home. It’s a great trip to the Redwoods.
